Great News for Kidney Failure Patients!

National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia provides funding for Dialysis at Home

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia, a non-profit charity organisation that has expanded its role from being just a dialysis treatment provider, to becoming a one-stop national resource centre for all kidney-related matters, has announced a collaboration with Lucenxia Malaysia, a subsidiary of Adventa Berhad.

NKF has announced its program to resume funding and sponsorship of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, where dialysis is done at the home of patients.

PD is a self-care, home- based dialysis treatment which frees the patient from the inconvenience of travelling to a haemodialysis (HD) centre three times a week. A variant of PD is Automated PD or APD where the procedure of dialysis is facilitated by a machine and done at night while the person is asleep. The person is free to do all daily activities during his or her waking hours.

NKF’s decision to resume funding of PD patients is in line with the Ministry of Health’s direction of PD Preferred policy, whereby all new patients are encouraged to receive PD as their preferred dialysis treatment modality.

Kidney disease is on the increase in Malaysia with approximately 2.5 million Malaysians having some form of kidney disease in 2014. Of this number about 35,000 people are on dialysis, with the number increasing to 7,000 each year.

“Given the rise in kidney disease in Malaysia, NKF will be supporting the Malaysian government’s decision to adopt PD Preferred Policy, as the treatment is more cost-effective and convenient for patients, since it is designed for use at home.  It is also less resource intensive when compared to traditional HD, and patients are in full control of their own dialysis treatment.” said Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad, Chairman of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia.

In conjunction with NKF’s announcement, Lucenxia Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Adventa Berhad, has made a donation of RM76,800 to NKF to support the Dialysis at Home initiative through PD.

Lucenxia INTELLIS is an intelligent Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) cycler designed for PD patients, to receive dialysis treatment at home during their sleep, so that they can enjoy greater quality of life, and have full freedom during the day.

“Every year, NKF needs to raise RM14.5 million to subsidize the dialysis treatments cost for more than 1,500 patients who seek treatment at our 26 dialysis centers nationwide.  This grant from Lucenxia will ease the burden on patients and on our organization as well. We hope that with the APD modality, we can now support PD while giving them better quality of life, and the freedom to continue their regular daytime activities. With the advanced technology from Lucenxia’s INTELLIS APD cycler, patients and caregivers can lead fuller lives, and able to return to work, as the treatment is done at the home of the patient during their sleep” added Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad.

According to Lucenxia (M) Sdn Bhd’s Managing Director, Mr. Low Chin Guan, “Lucenxia is a proud product of Malaysia which has introduced many new concepts to possibility of APD, enabling patients to continue their employment and participate in daily activities with family and friends.  They are no longer constrained to thrice weekly trips to a dialysis center, as INTELLIS Dialysis at Home frees them and lets them regain control of their lives.  PD patients also generally do not suffer from the extreme high and low in energy level in-between hemodialysis treatment sessions.”
